beginnings

I’m so grateful for yoga.  Every day.  Over the past year, my practice has really intensified, and getting my Yoga Teacher Training Certification at Dhyana Yoga in Philly really opened the world of yoga up to me in so many new exciting ways.  For the past five years, striving for health and wellbeing has been the one consistent part of my life that has made any sense – through problems with my lower back, severe panic disorder, career transitions, divorce, and finally the death of my beloved dog this summer.  All through this, I’ve worked towards finding the balance I need to be my best self.  It turns out I need a lot of exercise, and that yoga is a very big part of this.  I walk, run, hike, orienteer, play tennis, and whatever else I can get my hands on- but doing yoga as close to every day as possible is the active balm I need to quiet the unproductive circular storm in my mind, stretch and flex all my limbs, and open my heart to the possibilities that life has to offer.  I leave the mat feeling whole, flushed with vitality.  I’m on a journey to myself, to see what I’m capable of.  And because I’ve learned this gracious self-care, I am able to give with a wholeness I’ve never experienced before, letting go of expectation of anything in return.  I give because I have compassion and love to give.  Sharing the joy of yoga is one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve ever had – helping someone else find the way that yoga can heal, specific to their bodies and minds, feels like a calling.

So, back to being grateful for the path that’s unfolding.  A huge thank you to my teachers, beginning with Kate Goodyear and all the beauties at Our Yoga Home in Conshohocken, who inspired me to delve deeper and pointed me towards Dhyana.  At Dhyana, the wonderful teachers John Vitarelli, Amanda Medina, Diana D’Amato Vitarelli, Bruno Circolo, Alex Holmes, and Megan Kirk all provided a solid foundation in Classical Vinyasa Yoga in the Ashtanga lineage, as well as an invitation to explore so many different modules:

  • Anatomy
  • Ashtanga Theory
  • Pre-Natal Yoga
  • Pranayama (breathing practices)
  • Meditation
  • Chakras
  • Mantras
  • Assists and Adjustments
  • Use of Props
  • Sequencing
  • Ayurveda

Brian Jeans has also been instrumental in giving me confidence in my teaching abilities, and his beautiful encouragement has led to some very exciting developments in my yoga practice (more on this later!) Finally, studying Mantra and Vedic astrology recently with Ian Boccio has unlocked another whole plane for me.  Thank you all for giving your knowledge and wisdom to help me find my way towards grace and wellness!
